Our CALD Centre Based Day Care offers recreational, therapeutic and social activities for CALD frail elderly or people with dementia.
CALD centre based day care
The CALD Centre Based Day Care is an Australian Government funded program that provides opportunities for isolated elderly to engage in socialisation through group activities held at Sydney MCS Day Care Centre. It also provides carers of elderly with extended respite.
The aim is to support seniors to maintain their independence and connection within their community, therefore reducing psychosocial problems such as anxiety, insecurity, depression and loneliness. Like all our services it is delivered within a cultural and linguistic appropriate context and in a manner that acknowledges the individual’s uniqueness.
Currently the CALD Centre Based Day Care program includes a frail aged and dementia specific group for seniors from a Chinese or Italian background and also a Multicultural group for seniors with a Polish or Maltese background. It’s a respite program that provides seniors with cultural sensitive activities, meals and outings.
Transport to and from the centre is provided with Sydney MCS’s buses that are wheelchair accessible.
Sydney MCS also runs Chinese, Italian, Maltese, Spanish and Polish social groups for more independent seniors that do not require transport.
All group participants are invited to enjoy a range of centre and outings-based activities that are coordinated by the program coordinator.
Eligibility is determined by a set of predefined criteria by the Australian Government and targeted towards financially disadvantaged and socially isolated people from a CALD background, aged 65 years or over, residing in the Local Government areas of Botany, Randwick, Sydney, Waverley or Woollahra.
In addition to the Government subsidy, there is a small contribution fee for meals and transportation. An additional cost may be charged where a special outings-based activity is arranged.
Referrals come from a large variety of sources including self or carer referrals, Aged Care Assessment Teams (ACAT), multicultural services, Carer Respite Centres, and doctors. Anybody in the community is welcome to make a referral.
